The people of DeKalb County, Indiana enjoy classic automobiles and historical landmarks and heritage. However, there is another item that DeKalb County residents celebrate, which is: pickles. Thanks to Sechler’s Pickle Factory, which is located in St. Joe (and has been open for almost a century), there has been a Pickle Festival for 19 years. This year’s St. Joe Pickle Festival was a success, just like the years before.
One great aspect of the St. Joe Pickle Festival is that there are activities for people of every age! The adults that attended the 2015 Pickle Festival enjoyed band performances, parades and fireworks, food trucks, and pickle tasting! For kids of every age, there was a Kids tractor pull, a Pickle Derby, face painting, Jazzy Jumper Inflatables, and much more!
The vendor tent, which seemed to be a prime spot at the festival, had all sorts of items and goods for sale. Most popular, of course, was the Sechler’s Pickle section. There were many pickles to be taste-tested and also individual dill pickles to be purchased!
As I strolled through the tents and activities, I could not help but notice how many people had a smile on their face; The St. Joe Pickle Festival is an event that many people enjoy. One of them is Sadie Bishop, who has loved pickles for as long as she can remember. She said, “I have been going to the Pickle Festival for over 15 years.” Bishop also mentioned she was interviewed by the Food Network when they came to the Pickle Festival in 2007 to name it an “All-American Festival!”
Along with taste-testing and walking through the flea market, we enjoyed watching the kids activities and eating delicious fried pickles. Sadie, who is a pickle connoisseur, pointed us in the direction of the best fried pickles at the festival! They are made using the Sechler’s dill pickle spears, and fried to crispy perfection! We also watched the “All-Night Posse Band” perform country and rock music in the entertainment tent!
I look forward to going to the 20th Annual St. Joe Pickle Festival next year…maybe I will try the Pickle Ice Cream!
